Target Coupons

It has been waaaaayyy too long since I've posted! Now that I have some time, I'd like to try to consistently post again!

Some webpages insist that Target is cheaper for groceries than the regular market. I'm not sure about that as I've never price compared. One of the great things about Target though is they allow you to use BOTH a Target coupon AND a manufacturer coupon on the same item. For example, if you have a $2 off Target coupon and a $1 off manufacturer coupon, you'd get $3 off the item. That's worth scoping out!

Also, the Target website has coupons for clothes and shoes, something I never knew! Well worth the look!

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

One of the commitments I've made to myself is to read more for pleasure. I find myself in the rut of mindless television watching, going on autopilot and passively soaking in whatever junk is on the tube. In order to facilitate that change I've commited to reading at least one book a month for fun and posting reviews/recommendations. This month I sort of cheated; I actually listened to The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. The book was so powerful for me though that I really want to share it with others.

This novel, published in 2006, has sat in my library cue for at least a year. I heard of the book and was mildly interested but the timing of my actually listening to it was fortuitous. I truly believe we are given the gifts we need when we need them and this book was no exception. This book came to me at a time when I was craving affirmation that I was on the right track. Even if you aren't in search of comfort, I guarentee you will enjoy the story for the story itself.

Mitch Albom crafts the story of Eddie, a war veteran, who as a maintenance man at a seaside amusement park, feels his life is meaningless. The story details his life, from the optimistic youth of the man to his hardened and somewhat bitter old age. His life is filled with the mundane nature of his work, loneliness, and sadness.

The story begins on Eddie's 83rd birthday - when Eddie dies in an accident at the park. He dies trying to save a little girl from a falling ride cart. He awakens in the afterlife and learns that Heaven isn't quite what he expected: there's no lush Gardens of Eden or white, pearly gates. In this afterlife, Eddie's earthly life is explained to him by five people who were in it. In Albom's afterlife, these people may be those that you loved and cherished deeply, but not necessarily so. They are people whose lives have interesected yours; people who have been changed deeply by that intersection.

This novel is a beautifully written story about how we may not always know whose lives we change. Each of the five characters was altered dramatically by the interaction with Eddie. In some cases, he had no idea of the impact and only vaguely had a recollection of the actual person.

I think of the lessons in this story as I teach my students, help someone less fortunate than myself, or am just being kind to others. Do we ever really know the impact we have on others? I can honestly say I've made major changes in my life, most notably going back to college, due to an off handed comment of another. When I was a working, single mom of three kids I worked as an Office Manager at a local lumber company. Wes, a middle aged men who worked in the yard had to have back surgery and ended up on lifelong disability. As I was discussing the paperwork with Lee, one of the owners, he said "I'm not sure why he never thought to get an education. This job was fine for him when he was young but it's just not what an aging man should do. He could have gone to school while he had this job and have bettered his career."

Those few sentances really had an impact on me. At the time I was in my early 30's, recently divorced, and trying to figure out what to do with my life. I never really thought of a career (gave up a scholarship to attend U.S.C. to move back east with my husband). All I ever really wanted to be was Donna Reed - a stay at home mom. But life had different plans for me and, less than 3 years after moving back east, I was divorced with an 11, 6 and 2 year old. I knew I could never make the kind of money I wanted/needed working at the lumber yard but the thought of going to school wasn't really something that had dawned on me. But Lee's comment really impacted me. His observation was both true and profound. It really changed my life. I don't think I ever told him that. I think I need to let him know.

So think about that when you are talking with others. In my case, the comments had a powerful positive effect on my life. In the same sense, the negative words we use can have an equally negative impact. While thoughts and words flow readily from our lips, the reaction of the target is really what matters.

Changes for the New Year

The new year is heralding in changes for me and this blog in particular. I started the blog last year with the intention of using it to convey info to friends and family. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to keep up with (I'm basically lazy). In 2010 I am changing the function and purpose of the blog and, hopefully, it will be of greater value.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I'm feeling rather lost and in need of a new direction. I earned my Ph.D. several years ago - no easy task - and while that was a great accomplishment, that was my last big dream. I believe you have to vision a goal in order to make it happen and, alas, I haven't been able to hone in on a goal for the last 3 years or so. I'm doing okay - adjunct teaching and consulting - but feel I'm just getting by. There's no passion or driving purpose to my life at this point.

I want to use this blog to help me in several ways. First, the blog will serve as a online journal of sorts. It will enable me to gather my thoughts and explore directions. Since I spend hours of my day online, this seems like a good use of the medium. Secondly, I want to learn more about the art of blogging. Since I am a fan of many, many sites, I'd like to learn more about how to create an interesting and successful blog. Finally, by creating an online mechanism I'm somewhat accountable to others who may come across my blog. I seem to work best if I get feedback from others. Please feel free to post comments/suggestions. Part of my life challenge at this point is that I'm really isolated - which is not good for me - or anyone else for that matter. I want to change that.

So that's just a little bit about me and my repurposing of this blog. There is much more to come and future posts will delve more into the details of who I am and who I want to be. I just want to make sure to get this first entry of 2010 in since I'll be traveling for the next 2 days and unable to post.

Free NRA Membership

One of my all time favorite websites is Ebates.com. This site offers rebates from hundreds of different on-line stores, including Staples, Macys, Borders, and Ebay, to name just a few.

The process is easy: scout out what you want on-line, then go to Ebates to see if the site you want to purchase from is an Ebates participating site. Click on that site through Ebates and you will get a rebate between 2% and 18% of your purchase price. (The amount of the rebate is site specific). Ebates will send you a check quarterly for all your rebates. I've been an Ebates shopper for the past year and have gotten $112 in rebates. Not bad for buying stuff I was going to get anyway!

Free Copy of "Confessions of a Shopaholic"

Sophie Kinsella's "Confessions of a Shopaholic" is a witty, funny book. As the title reveals, the book is about a young woman, Rebecca Bloomwood, who spends, spends, spends. While this is all well and good when she has the funds, this proves to be problematic when her money runs out.

While I haven't seen the movie (I heard it wasn't very good - and the timing was awful - how can we empathize with a rapid spender when the economy is in the tank)? The book is really a delight and I highly recommend it. Heck, for this price, how can you say no?!

Rayovac AAA Maximum Plus Alkaline Batteries: 100 for $8.99

The Graveyard Mall is listing 100 Rayovac AAA Maximum Plus Alkaline Batteries for $8.99. What a deal! According to their site these batteries are "cosmetically imperfect". (Who knew there was such beauty discrimination in batteries)?! The details state:

• 100 unpackaged AAA batteries
• Cosmetically blemished, but otherwise new and in perfect working order
  Alkaline batteries
• Approximate ship date of May 01, 2009
• Batteries have expiration dates in 2010 - 2013 so they're good for quite some time.
